Telus SCAM written by Dianna Smith-Campbell

Telus IPhone  13 offer scam I was phoned this morning by a person claiming to be from Telus who told me that Telus was going to give me a free IPhone 13.  This young man was quite personable, but when I asked him questions, he seemed to be taken aback. He told me that Telus was giving me the iPhone 13 without any fee attached, and without the standard two year contract attached. This is when I actually started laughing as I asked him more questions. I asked him then if they were giving me the phone for free, and I wasn't required to have a contract attached to it, then why would Telus do that as they weren't getting anything out of the deal.  Even though I knew better, getting the new phone…

Fraud: Seniors aren’t the only ones

Nidhi Razdan was all set to travel to Harvard University to start a new job, and a new life, when she received a stunning email. A famous Indian news anchor at the apex of her career, Razdan believed she would soon start teaching at Harvard, a dream ticket out of an almost unbearably toxic media atmosphere in India. She had told the world that she was leaving the news business for America and she had freely shared her most important personal information with her new employer — passport details, medical records, bank account numbers, everything. But when she swiped open her phone in the middle of a January night, she read the following message, from an associate dean at Harvard: “There is no record of, nor any knowledge of, your name or your appointment.”…

AGEISM: a double-edged sword

Ageism cuts both ways. It hurts the older adult and the younger adult. It's harmful, depressing and dangerous. Ageism is a systemic form of oppression, but unlike other causes of inequity, such as racism, sexism, or ableism, anyone can experience it and if you live long enough everyone will experience it. People do not always take ageism as seriously as other forms of inequity. Comedians who would never make racist jokes, think making derogatory comments about older adults is not only acceptable but also funny. Data from the 2020 National Poll on Healthy Aging found that 82% of older Americans reported experiencing ageism regularly. The survey found that: 65% experienced ageist messages from the media45% experienced interpersonal ageism36% had internalized ageism Some of the ways that people are discriminated against is as follows: refusing…

BEWARE Romance scams

As more people use the Internet for dating, scammer/criminals see an opportunity to find their next victim. Romance scammers create elaborate fake profiles, often on social media, and exploit seniors’ loneliness for money, especially during the holidays. In some cases, romance scammers may (or pretend to) be overseas, and request money to pay for visas, medical emergencies, and travel expenses to come visit Canada. These criminals work hard to make sure the fake relationship drags on for a long time. Crime tracking reports that romance scammers get a lot of money from seniors—The government reported in 2019 that seniors lost nearly $84 million to romance scams. How to you know??? The person lives either in another country or far away from you, making it hard for you to show up at their door.Their profile seems…

Alberta Health Services is delaying the implementation of its COVID-19 vaccine mandate and introducing a rapid testing program in areas where the vaccine requirement could cause staffing shortages.More than 100 travellers who recently returned to Alberta from countries where the Omicron variant is spreading have been instructed to quarantine, as Premier Jason Kenney announced new measures meant to contain the variant of concern on Monday. While the Omicron variant has been detected in Ontario, an infectious disease expert says it’s likely inevitable it makes its way into Alberta.A COVID-19 adviser to the South Africa government and the Pretoria doctor who first sounded the alarm about the new strain says symptoms linked to the Omicron variant have been mild so far, but the WHO cautions there’s “no information” symptoms are different from other strains.
