$6000 prize. The 2022 CBC Nonfiction Prize is now open for submissions. You have until Feb. 28, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. ET to submit your original, unpublished works of nonfiction, up to 2,000 words. There is no minimum word requirement. You may submit memoir, biography, humour writing, essay (including personal essay), travel writing or a feature article.  The entry fee is $25, which covers the costs of administering the prize.

‘New variants’ could still emerge In driving home his ask, Tedros of the World Health Organization warns that the longer the acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic drags on, the more chances for new variants like Omicron to emerge. Omicron, which was discovered in late November by South African scientists, is spreading across the world and driving up infections in both the vaccinated and unvaccinated, the WHO has warned. “It is possible that new variants could evade our countermeasures and become fully resistant to current vaccines or past infection, necessitating vaccine adaptations,” Tedros said. The more people we vaccinate the more we reduce the chance of variants and the chance of breakthrough variants for those who are vaccinated.

Dark Patterns of Manipulation online

Dark patterns are digital design elements that manipulate users into making decisions they otherwise wouldn’t, often to a corporation’s benefit. A simple example is burying the ‘logout’ link well within a series of menu branches. This encourages me to stay on the site longer or leave without logging in again. This makes for less ‘friction’ and ultimately more spending. Here are some other examples. “Sally, in Canada, just bought 4 bottles of our magic serum.” Or “9 others are looking at this item,” or “limited availability,” or “6 people have this item in their cart,” or “this price is valid for 7 more minutes.” Independent research found that many of these claims to be false.
